Fun Ways to Observe National Wine Day with Friends

America loves to drink wine. In fact, it’s estimated by the Wine Institute that over 949 million gallons of it are consumed each year in the country, averaging out to nearly three gallons of wine for each resident. Wine enthusiasts have two holidays they can observe for the drink that novelist Robert Louis Stevenson called “bottled poetry.” May 25, 2019 is National Wine Day, and June 8, 2019 is National Rosé Day. “There’s a camaraderie that wine lovers have, because all they all share in their appreciation for great wine,” explains Blake Helppie, managing partner at Rosé Piscine, a wine specifically made to drink over ice. “If you have never had a special event or activity to observe the day, you are missing out. Make this a year that you mark the day with some fun in it s honor.”

Millions of people around the country have what is referred to as oenophilia, which is the love of wine. The two upcoming days dedicated to celebrating wine provide a great reason to have a fun wine-related event or activity with friends and family. Here are some fun ways to celebrate National Wine Day:

  • Wine trivia night. Gather up lots of fun facts and interesting wine trivia and hold a wine trivia night. Divide everyone up on teams or play individually. Have everyone bring wine or foods and snacks that pair well with them, and have a fun time. Reserve a special bottle of wine for the trivia winner.
  • Host a wine bottle exchange. Invite people to bring a bottle of wine to a swap, where they can exchange it with others. This gives people a chance to try something new, and maybe offload something hanging out in their cooler that they would rather swap.
  • Have a sip and paint party. Gather at a restaurant or art center, or host it at your house and invite an art teacher to come lead the class. Sip some wine while you paint a masterpiece you can take home with you.
  • Schedule a neighborhood wine walk. Get to know some of your neighbors by getting people in on a neighborhood wine walk. If you get 5-10 houses to take part, have people walk house to house mingling and trying different wines at each one.
  • Create a local wine club. Use the wine holidays as a kick-off to creating a local wine club. Have members meet up once per month at someone’s house to share wine and conversation.
  • Host a lawn game night. With nicer weather upon us, it’s a great time to invite people over for a lawn game and wine night. Gather some favorite adult lawn games, such as corn hole, and have a sipping good time.
  • Have an outdoor wine movie night. Get an outdoor projector and show a wine-themed movie as people sip wine. Wine movies to consider include “A Walk in the Clouds,” “Somm,” and “Bottle Shock.”

“With two days dedicated to wine coming up, make a goal to have some fun with it,” added Helppie. “Not that we need an excuse to enjoy some wine among friends, but it’s a nice way to set the tone, enjoy the evening, and observe the holidays.”

Rosé Piscine is a French wine that was made to always be served on the rocks. Rosé Piscine is made by Pascal Nacenta in southwest France. The tasting notes include being pale salmon in color, with a light to medium body. On the bouquet, it offers notes of Meyer lemon, skin of peach, vanilla, kiwi and McIntosh apple. Rosé Piscine is made with an indigenous varietal of southwest France: Négrette, which is a small, very dark and tough-skinned grape known for its powerful aromatic qualities. The fruit is sourced in Côtes du Frontonnais, which is located just southwest of Gaillac and just north of the city of Toulouse, on the western bank of the Tarn River. Wine Enthusiast awarded the Rosé Piscine region the Wine Region of the Year 2017 award.

Rosé Piscine was created by Jacques Tranier, the president of Vinovalie, a group of producers in the French Southwest. In 2003, he was on a vacation in Saint Tropez when he saw many women drinking rosé on the rocks. He ordered one to give it a try, only to be disappointed in the taste of the wine being diluted by the melting ice. This set him on a mission to create a rosé that could hold its integrity while being served over ice. To find a store near you or to order online, visit the site at: rosepiscine.com.

About Rosé Piscine

A unique rosé wine in that it was created to be served over ice, Rosé Piscine is taking the nation by storm. Over two million bottles of it were sold in France and Brazil last year, and it is now available in the U.S. Rosé Piscine is pale salmon in color, light to medium body, and made from Négrette, a small grape known for its powerful aromatic qualities. Financial Freedom for Millennials: A Bucket List

LinkedIn
millennials discussing financial options

By Molly Barnes, Digital Nomad Life

The 2007 movie “The Bucket List” told the story of two terminally ill men seeking to finish out all the things they’ve always wanted to do but never completed. The duo set out on their adventure with the intention to fulfill all their dreams before they “kicked the bucket.”

While most people associate bucket lists with experiences, you can apply the same concept to personal finance matters, as well. Essentially, you list all the things you need to accomplish in your financial life and then start making moves to get them done. According to financial experts, people should start to tick off money-matter items on their lists while they are still in their 20s and 30s. With this strategy, they’ll achieve financial freedom sooner than later because they’ve set themselves up for a less stressful future as they reach retirement age.

At this point, retirement probably seems a million years away, but now is the time to start thinking wisely when it comes to money. Check out our financial bucket list for millennials.

1. Live with roommates

Most millennials want to move out of their parents’ home but can’t always afford to do it. Why forego and miss out on the pleasures of autonomy you can enjoy living on your own? Get some roommates instead to help share housing costs.

When seeking roommates, always be smart and keep safety in mind during the selection process. Everyone, especially women, should stay away from listings on Craigslist and other platforms that don’t fully vet the people out who post these listings.

Once you’ve got your roommates in the house, aside from the financial savings you’ll enjoy by splitting the rent, you can make some great memories — or at least accumulate a few great stories to someday tell your family and friends.

2. Move to an affordable city

Sure, New York is the city that never sleeps, and Los Angeles sees a lot of action, too —but these cities are incredibly expensive to live in. Instead of struggling (even with the help of roommates) in an expensive city, consider relocating to a more affordable city with a lower cost of living. Kansas City, for example, is not only affordable, but it also offers plenty of great job opportunities and even boasts some of the shortest commuting times in the country.

3. Downsize and sell some stuff

We live at a time minimizing is en vogue, especially for millennials. Aside from being a trendy thing to do, selling off possessions you no longer need or want can net you some serious cash. Try selling clothes, unused gift cards, old electronics and gadgets, pretty much anything.

If you have old toys, video games, or other nostalgic items you don’t necessarily want to hang onto anymore, try selling these too. You’d be surprised at how well nostalgia sells!  Set up an account on eBay (or another preferred platform) and get selling. Then take that money and save it or invest it so it grows.

4. Learn thrifty shopping habits

Even if you’re aiming to downsize, there will still be stuff you need. Instead of paying full price for new items, learn the art of thrifting by shopping at places like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity resale stores. You can find great deals on everything for the home from kitchen necessities to furniture, along with personal items, too, such as clothing and accessories.

Other ways to save on shopping are to watch for sales, try extreme couponing, and follow discount sites such as Groupon for deals on things you want to buy. Also check out Craigslist and Freecycle to find freebies in your neighborhood.

5. Make a few investments

While making habitual changes can go a long way toward achieving financial freedom, you’ll want to find other ways to increase your bank account. Why not try purchasing some stocks and seeing what happens? Some online brokerage sites let users start buying with as little as $100 and make trades for $5. You can buy small amounts and see if you can aggressively make them grow. “Playing the market” is a unique experience that not everybody gets in their lifetime — and watching your stock’s values go up is a thrill.

6. Launch a business

Even if you’re holding down a full-time job, you can launch a business on the side to generate some extra cash and help build your financial future. It could be something as straightforward as buying a property to use as a vacation rental. Or you can build a brand in your spare time, you can market your business by creating a presence on social media and cultivating helpful business relationships. Sign yourself up to attend some trade shows to help establish a name for yourself.

Depending on your line of work, you may need to obtain a license, insurance, or meet other local legal requirements. Be sure to have your ducks in a row and do everything legally. Also, remember that you’ll need to file taxes as a business. An online calculator can help you make the necessary tax calculations.

Achieving financial freedom is a wonderful feeling! The sooner you get started, the sooner you’ll be that much closer to your ultimate money goals … and then you’ll be able to afford the things on your “other” bucket list.

How Boundaries at Work Help at Home

LinkedIn
young business woman on phone

By Suzanne Brown

You headed out from the office a few hours ago for a friend’s birthday happy hour, and the office has emailed, called, or texted three times already. Can’t they figure it out on their own? It’s Wednesday and you’re at your son’s baseball game. Sure, it’s for a group of 10-year-olds, but it’s important to him, and that makes it important to you. Why has your boss called you four times already?

Your client keeps trying to contact you with a message saying, “I have a question,” but she won’t leave what the question is. Is it an emergency, or can it wait until you’re back in the office after the weekend is over?

Does this sound familiar? Don’t they understand you’re off the clock right now?

The Need for Boundaries at Work

Boundaries. It’s part of what’s missing in these scenarios. A consistent piece of advice from the more than 110 professional part-time working moms, whom I interviewed, was about the need to set and maintain boundaries at work.

Setting Boundaries Can Be Hard

Many of us want to be connected and not miss a thing. Setting boundaries means we might miss something. Deadlines don’t usually move for us. We move for them. A crisis might blow up or maybe we’ll miss a huge opportunity. And part of it is often simply trying to keep all parties happy. But, what’s the likelihood of these things coming up or a crisis happening in the hours after you leave the office? I’ll bet it’s generally low, especially if you schedule around deadlines and have an idea of whatever is coming up.

Technology as an Enabler

Technology is a blessing and curse. It allows us to work from anywhere anytime, which we love. And it enables clients, colleagues, and managers to get a hold of us whenever they choose. If you combine that with people who don’t have their own boundaries or maybe you haven’t established yours, you’re in for a lot of interruptions from the office during your downtime each day or even on vacation. Remember that it’s OK to walk away from the office and turn off technology.

The Boundaries at Work Are Important for so Many Reasons

  • You want to pay attention to your family and be present.
  • You need a break each day to recharge to perform your best.
  • Time away from the office each day helps manage stress.
  • You look at things with a fresh perspective when you can put them down for a while.
  • If you’re working part time, it makes financial sense to work the time you get paid.

Want Some Ideas on Boundaries You Can Start to Implement?

  • No phone or electronics time for X amount of time each day or for the time when you’re with family, unless it’s an emergency. I might check email or texts while I’m home with the boys, but I don’t usually respond to anything that isn’t urgent. And no phone at the breakfast or dinner table.
  • Response to non-emergency communications (phone, email, text) within 24 hours or by end of day or whatever timeframe you’re comfortable with. You might be traveling, in an all-day meeting, sick, taking care of a sick child, or working on a major deadline. Give yourself some wiggle room, so that people don’t expect you to respond in minutes and then keep contacting you until you do finally respond.
  • Real work emergencies can come up. Define what an emergency is to your team, clients, manager, etc. Everyone you’re interacting with needs to be on the same page, as they can vary from person to person or even project to project. If you get a rare call or text after hours, you’ll know something is going on that needs your attention.
  • You can use boundaries to get your work done. Designate meeting or call days or times on your calendar, so that you have work time and time to get work done each day.

Boundaries Are Set—Now What?

The easiest option is to establish boundaries from the beginning of a relationship, either a new job or with a new client. If it’s an existing relationship, you need to create a plan and give time for people to re-adjust to new boundaries. Maybe you create a transition plan for yourself so that it’s not like a light switch between two sets of boundaries. It will take retraining a client, your boss or your team. You need to stick to your boundaries over time, though, even when things get iffy and pushback kicks in. You can do it!

I’ve focused on the consistent boundaries at work and how they impact you every day. If you’re interested in more on why vacation is important, since those are bigger boundaries, read my blog about the importance of vacation or time away.

How to Make Your Commute So Much Better

LinkedIn
young woman driving

At some point during your daily commute, you have likely experienced all five stages of grief. And while traffic is inevitable, it’s important to remember that you’re not in this alone. Your morning commute doesn’t have to be a never-ending sequence of white-knuckling your steering wheel or squeezing yourself onto a subway car full of human cattle. Here are a few ways to make your commute not only more bearable, but even enjoyable, whether you’re driving, biking, carpooling, or taking the train.

Drive Your Way to a Better You

Want to catch up on your reading while driving to work without causing a 20-car pileup? Podcasts and audiobooks make the morning and evening commute worth living. Audible has over 425,000 books for you to choose from—you could be driving in your car every second for the rest of your life, and you would never run out of books to listen to.

Your vessel isn’t just a 4-wheel chariot, it’s also a virtual classroom. Always wanted to learn another language, but never had the time? There are thousands of books that will help you get a leg up on all kinds of languages, whether you’re just starting out, or you want a refresher course for the French you took in high school.

Practice Self-Care on the Subway

One of the best things about taking the train to work is that you can let yourself go—just promise that you won’t take your shoes off.

Sure, if you have the elbow room, you could open your laptop and get some work done by catching up on email, but it’s also an excellent time to de-clutter your mind. Step up your self-care regimen by unplugging your brain and starting a meditation practice.

Geared for your mind and body, there are audio-guided fitness programs for meditation and working out. And while it might seem contradictory, there’s no better place for a guided meditation than a crowded commuter train—it’s the perfect head trip for winding down after a long day.

Carpool and Meet New People

What if there was a way to meet new people while driving to work AND accessing the glory that is the carpool lane? Sure, Waze can make your commute a little smoother by crowdsourcing your traffic trouble spots in real time, but you can also use their carpool app to find coworkers or other passengers to share a ride with.

Not only are you eliminating congestion from the highway, but you’re also likely getting to work faster while connecting with your fellow travelers. Plus, by taking other cars off the road, you’re producing less carbon and pollution, all while saving money on gas and tolls.

With your new rideshare pals in tow, you could create your own version of Cash Cab where the winner doesn’t have to contribute to gas for the week. Carpool Karaoke is also a great option, but you might want to make sure everyone can carry a tune first.

Use Those Feet

If you’re fortunate enough to live close to your office, ditch your wheels or the train for some running shoes or a road bike, even if it’s just a few times a week. Physical activity is proven to be beneficial for your mental health, and starting your day with a little fresh air is a great way to rid yourself of work-related stress.

Picture of Chinese herbal medicine on a table

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Traditional Chinese medicine has been practiced for thousands of years and is well respected worldwide. Out of that health and wellness field there has emerged the area of Chinese herbal formulas.

One company, DAO Labs, has taken the art of Chinese herbal medicine and has created a line of safe and effective, easy-to-use formulas that help with a variety of health needs.

DAO’s Women’s Formula is used for women seeking to strengthen the regularity of the menstrual cycle, while also offering increased energy each month. In addition, DAO offers their Women’s Monthly Kit which combines two different formulas for different phases of their cycle, offering a month-long solution for menstrual support.

The Immunity Support herbal powder is one of the strongest forms of immunity defense that has been used for over 750 years and remains of the most popular formulas across Asia still to this day. It’s great for cold and pollen season, interacting with large crowds, for teachers and parents, and when you feel there is something coming on.

“There is support for these important health needs, and we have used traditional Chinese medicine principals to address them,” added McGarvey. “We have made it simple, by creating the healing herbal formula. We have taken the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine and put it in healing powders that are accessible to all.”

All DAO Labs herbal medicine formulas come in single-serve packets with enticing flavors. They are sustainable, have gone through a rigorous testing process, and are manufactured and tested in the US. Each serving is stirred into a glass of water to create a tasty and healthy beverage.

DAO Labs’ motto is that healing begins with nature. Their mission is to help people heal through natural remedies. As such, they are also committed to helping to protect and bring awareness to the environment, in an effort to help stop the illegal wildlife trade. Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss America Are All Black Women For First Time In Pageant History

LinkedIn
Chelsie Kryst miss usa winner poses on stage smiling holding bouquet of flowers

Cheslie Kryst contributed to pageant history when she was crowned Miss USA on Thursday: For the first time, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America are all black women.

Kryst, who represented North Carolina in the pageant, is a lawyer who practices civil litigation and does pro bono work to help get reduced sentences for incarcerated people.

Miss Teen USA 2019, Kaliegh Garris, was crowned Sunday. The high school senior from Connecticut plans to attend college and pursue a degree in nursing. Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin, who won her competition in September, hailed from New York.

Both Kryst and Garris were applauded for wearing their natural hair during their pageants.

“There were a few naysayers saying, ‘You look better with straight hair,’ or ‘You should put in extensions and straighten your natural hair,’” Garris told Refinery 29, later adding, “I feel more confident and comfortable with my natural hair.”

Both Miss USA, Nana Meriweather, and Miss Teen USA, Logan West, were black in 2012. But Miss America that year, Laura Kaeppeler, was not.

At Thursday’s final Miss USA event, Kryst expertly answered a question on whether the Me Too and Time’s Up movements against sexual harassment and assault had “gone too far.”

“I don’t think these movements have gone too far,” she said. “What Me Too and Time’s Up are about are making sure that we foster safe and inclusive workplaces in our country.”

“As an attorney, that’s exactly what I want to hear,” she added. “That’s exactly what I want for this country.”

The Benefits of Virtual Workshops Fuel a Wave of the Future

LinkedIn
ReenaBPatel-AliLevine-May14Workshop2019-Flyer1

Millions of parents would like to learn more about some of the most common issues surrounding kids today.  From tantrums and cyberbullying to single parenting, the more professional guidance you have, the better off you will be.
Today, many parents are turning to online virtual workshops to get the information they want and need. The virtual workshop field has become the wave of the future, as people appreciate the wide variety of benefits that they offer.

“Virtual workshops offer a great way for parents to get the information they need, without having to leave their home,” explains Reena B. Patel, a parenting expert, licensed educational psychologist, and author, who offer virtual workshops. “I’ve seen the positive impact that virtual workshops have, and once people have had them they want more of them. It’s an increasingly growing method for people to get effective parenting skills.”

Virtual workshops are becoming the wave of the future for numerous reasons, including:

  • Convenience. People can participate in a professional workshop without having to leave their home. They can take it on their mobile device or computer in the comfort of their living room or office, saving them time, as well as effort. Virtual workshops keep things simple.
  • Accessibility. Online virtual workshops open the world of knowledge up to people, because they are no longer bound to only being able to attend workshops in their geographic area. Virtual workshops give them access to professionals who may be on the other side of the country.
  • Budget friendly. Taking an online virtual workshop is more cost effective than taking one in person. Not only are the ticket prices typically more affordable, but you save the costs involved in traveling to attend a workshop in person.
  • Anonymity. Many people are interested in taking a parenting workshop, but don’t necessarily want everyone else knowing they did. By taking the workshop online, they can keep their attendance private and only share when they feel comfortable.
  • Skill building. Parents are dealing with issues today that others never had to contend with, such as cyberbullying and social media. Rather than try to guess their way through it, virtual workshops can help give them the insight they want, as well as the tools they need to successfully navigate these areas of parenting.

“Once you take a virtual workshop and see the positive impact it has on your life you will be hooked,” added Patel. “Virtual workshops make it simple and convenient for parents to get professional guidance. I’m looking forward to the ones I have scheduled for this month, especially because I have two celebrity guests joining!”

Reena B. Patel

Patel will be offering several virtual parenting workshops in May 2019, including:

  • Tantrums. Offered May 8, 2019 at 11:00 am pst, this virtual workshop will address the “why” behind the whining and tantrums with kids of all ages. The workshop will give you tried and true effective ways to get you and your child through these common challenges, without punishing them away. Learn about how tantrums are a child’s way of communicating with parents, and how you can use the “S.E.A.T.” solution to address them.
  • Cyberbullying and social media. Scheduled for May 14, 2019 at 1:00 pm pst, this virtual workshop will cover the current hot topic of kids constantly being on social media and cyberbullying. This teens and digital hygiene workshop will be co-hosted by celebrity mom and influencer Ali Levine. The workshop will focus on helping your child find the right balance and keep your kids safe from cyberbullying. Latina chef Daniela Soto-Innes is youngest to be named ‘World’s Best Female Chef’

Mexican-American chef Daniela Soto-Innes has become the youngest honoree to be named the World’s Best Female Chef by The World’s Best 50 Restaurants.

The award, which was announced Wednesday, recognizes the culinary achievements of one woman every year. Past winners include British chef Clare Smyth of London’s Core and Dominique Crenn, who leads San Francisco’s Michelin-three-star Atelier Crenn

Though she is known for running Cosme and Atla, two popular modern Mexican restaurants in New York City, Soto-Innes, 28, didn’t always plan on becoming a chef, according to the award announcement. She was a competitive swimmer during her young adulthood in Texas, where she moved from Mexico City when she was 12.

Yet the culinary arts were almost an inevitability for Soto-Innes, who was surrounded by a grandmother, mother and aunts who instilled a passion for cooking in her at a young age. “I grew up with a line of really strong women that love to cook,” Soto-Innes told The World’s Best 50 Restaurants. “When I was born, my mother was a lawyer with my father, but she wanted to be a chef because my grandma had a bakery and my great grandma went to school for cooking.

Everything was about who made the best cake, who made the best ceviche, who made the best mole. I just knew that it was the thing that made me the happiest.

It’s not only the flavorful food that appeals to Soto-Innes, but also the people who make it. Most of the staff at Cosme are Latin American immigrants, while a few hail from Russia and other countries, as well. It’s this fusion of people, ideas and recipes that makes the restaurant so successful, she said.

That shared knowledge has led to some of Cosme’s most famous dishes, including its fluffy fried tortillas called infladitas (which means inflated).

5 Ways to Make Mom Feel Like a Queen for a Day this Mother’s Day

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are around 43.5 million mothers in the country, who have given birth to nearly 96 million children. With Mother’s Day just around the corner on May 12, 2019, there will be millions of people looking for a unique and thoughtful ways to make mom feel like queen for a day.

After all, the Pew Research Center reports that moms are spending more time in the labor force today, a quarter of them are raising children on their own, and 77 percent of them report feeling a lot of pressure to be more involved as a parent. Moms today are wearing a lot of hats and are busier than ever before. They will welcome having a day of feeling special and being pampered.

“Moms do so much and for so many people, often putting their own interests aside as they do it,” explains Blake Helppie, managing partner at Rosé Piscine, a wine specifically made to drink over ice. “Mother’s Day is the perfect time to turn the spotlight on her and shower her with gratitude and special attention.”

Here are 5 ways to make mom feel like a queen for a day this Mother’s Day:

  • Give her health a boost. Most moms are great at taking care of others, but sometimes they forget to put their own health first. Buy mom a gift that will help make her health a priority all year long, such as a gym membership, online yoga instruction subscription, or sign her up for a health retreat that she can attend.
  • Give her the gift of a break. Give mom a basket that has a nice bottle of wine, such as Rosé Piscine, a good book, and carve out some time for her to relax and enjoy it. Take a look at some of the many things that mom does all day and see which ones you can do for her, to give her some down time.
  • Throw a Mother’s Day brunch. Think about all the moms you know in your area that are special to you. Plan an awesome “Mother’s Day Brunch” and invite them all to attend. Fill the brunch with homemade pastries and options that will go with some wine such as Rosé Piscine or mimosas. Have other men or women you know contribute to the event by providing a dish for the event. Wait on the moms and make them feel special as they chat and enjoy a great time in their honor.
  • Send mom to the spa. All moms love to be pampered with a massage, facial, or by spending time at the spa. But not all of them will set aside the time or funds to make it happen. Get her a gift certificate to a great spa where she will be pampered and renewed.
  • Plan a new and exciting adventure. Take mom on a special adventure, participating in something that is fun and that she’s not used to doing. Think about such options as a nighttime bioluminescent kayak tour, mountain biking, hiking, sailing, or a tour at the nearest art museum. Think about the types of things she likes to do, and then go big with it to plan an adventure she’ll always remember.

“Moms deserve more than we can give them, but these are ideas are a beautiful start,” added Rose_PiscineHelppie. “Add in a heartfelt word or two about how you feel about her and you have a winning combination.”

To find a store near you or to order online, visit the site at: www.rosepiscine.com.
