How to celebrate International Day of the Girl

Wednesday, Oct. 11, is International Day of the Girl, a day created by the United Nations in 2012 to highlight the challenges girls face around the world.

According to the UN, the day promotes the “empowerment” of the roughly 1.1 billion young girls currently living in the world.

“The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights,” the UN’s mission statement reads.

The day is marked by events all over the world, from India to Kenya to Washington to Paris, put on by humanitarian organizations, nonprofits, and governments alike.

This year, the day’s theme is: “EmPOWER girls: Before, during and after conflict.”

“Every 10 minutes, somewhere in the world, an adolescent girl dies as a result of violence. In humanitarian emergencies, gender-based violence often increases, subjecting girls to sexual and physical violence, child marriage, exploitation and trafficking. Adolescent girls in conflict zones are 90 per cent more likely to be out of school when compared to girls in conflict-free countries, compromising their future prospects for work and financial independence as adults,” the UN said.

NOGLSTP Recognizes Paul, Tanner, and Taubenheim as LGBTQ+ Educator, Scientist, and Engineer of the Year for 2018

Today, the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (NOGLSTP) is proud to announce the winners of its 2018 recognition awards for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) professionals in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The NOGLSTP Recognition Awards will be presented during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting in Austin, TX on Feb. 18. NOGLSTP is an affiliate of AAAS and will organize events, including the awards ceremony, to advocate for LGBTQ in STEM at the AAAS Annual Meeting.

Dr. Biswajit “Bish” Paul is NOGLSTP’s 2018 LGBTQ+ Educator of the Year. While completing doctoral research in molecular biology at the University of Washington. Paul invested time and effort to create new opportunities and improve the climate for his fellow undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers. He worked with University of Washington organizations, state government officials and national scientific societies to increase the visibility of under-represented communities. Notably, he spearheaded and secured $300,000 of funding per year from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to fund under-represented minority scientists conducting cancer research. Paul approached this, and all of his work, by combining his scientific talents with his personal identity as a gay, immigrant, scientist of color with a commitment to support his multiple communities. Paul has employed non-traditional avenues of public education throughout his career, including creating documentary films for national festivals and building exhibits on Gene Therapy for the Pacific Science Center. Most recently Paul was a Science Fellow at the California State Legislature sponsored by the California Council on Science & Technology (CCST). As a CCST Fellow, he served as a Policy Analyst in the Assembly’s Elections Committee and helped in the creation of evidence-based policies. “I am an immigrant, from a family that was not allowed to vote. I am a person of color, from a community where

engagement is very low. I can write and study from the lens of communities that are usually left behind in these policies,” Paul said.

Paul plans to continue working on issues of scientific policy and advocacy. His experiences have taught him that scientists can have significant impact on government policy and, therefore, on people’s lives in California and around the world. “The point of educating is to teach people who don’t understand the topic and who might disagree with you,” Paul said.

Dr. Danelle Tanner is NOGLSTP’s 2018 LGBTQ+ Scientist of the Year. Tanner’s research career began at Texas A&M where she was a graduate student at the Cyclotron Institute studying nuclear physics. She then took a position at Sandia National Laboratories to conduct radiation effects testing during underground nuclear weapons tests. She then changed fields, and her next position at Sandia led to career-long, and ongoing, research in reliability physics. “I always want to know why so I have kept my reliability focus on the fundamental, science-based, physics of failure approach,” Tanner said. Tanners work spans multiple fields: microelectronics, Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), capacitors, and nuclear weapon components. Tanner’s work has led to recognition by national scientific organizations, requests to be a featured speaker and editorial advisor, and to her appointment as a

Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia. When Tanner started college in the 1970s, the two paths she saw presented to women were nursing and teaching. She initially expected to teach math, but her first physics course exposed a pure love of science, a love of understanding the world at a fundamental

level. She now takes advantage of her decades of technical experience at Sandia to train and mentor fellow staff members. Both formally and informally, she educates staff to improve their technical and teaming skills in order to solve complex problems. Tanner is a founding member of Sandia’s LGBT employee networking

group, a role she uses to advocate on behalf of LGBT lab employees for pay and benefits equity. Tanner met her wife through this networking group.

David Taubenheim is NOGLSTP’s 2018 LGBTQ+ Engineer of the Year. Taubenheim’s work in signal processing and radio

communications has led to 15 patented inventions and his current position as the Manager of the National Intelligence Community Program Are at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL). In this role, Taubenheim is responsible for providing technical, financial, and strategic leadership for APL in support of the U.S. Intelligence Community they support. Taubenheim’s work has involved both software and electronic hardware developments, such as application-specific integrated circuits, to advance communications capabilities. Taubenheim is a married, gay man and encourages other people to be out at work. He wants STEM

students and professionals to know that LGBTQ people can advance and succeed in STEM careers. He has found engineers and

technology professionals to be welcoming, more focused on the problems to be solved than anything else. However, Taubenheim’s experience is that technical expertise is only one component to a strong team. “My work involves lots of teams. I’ve seen, first hand, that diversity is not just a tag line. It makes for higher energy, better teams, with better results,” Taubenheim said.

“The Recognition Awards were established in 2005 as a means to document and honor the contributions of outstanding LGBTQ science, engineering and technology professionals and to also honor corporations, academic institutions and businesses that support LGBTQ professionals so that advancements can be made in those fields”, stated Rochelle Diamond, chair of the NOGLSTP Board of Directors. Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement Seeks to End Job Biases During 2018 Leadership Tour

Chicago-based nonprofit sparks conversations on workplace issues and career advancement with Fortune 500 executives

The Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE), a national nonprofit that helps Latinos excel in their careers, announced a year-long leadership tour ‒ Dismantling Biases, Building Inclusive Leadership ‒ that seeks to create a candid dialogue among professionals and employers about pressing diversity issues and opportunities in the workplace.

The decision to address career progression for Latinos came after a survey of 900-plus HACE members revealed that while 30 percent work at an associate level, only 3 percent are at the executive level. In addition, when asked to rank their top barriers to advancement at their current employer, the three reasons that were most often ranked as their No. 1 hurdle are lack of opportunities, not feeling valued and lack of a clear structure for advancement, with 13 percent listing little chance to gain new skills or explore another job function.

“We intend to address the issue of career progression head-on by hosting a series of panel discussions with top executives to determine the future of what can be achieved,” said Patricia Mota, HACE president and CEO. She noted that the survey found that members consider diverse management, a more inclusive organizational culture and increased responsibilities as the top reasons for staying at a company.

“Unless companies change their approach to diversity from top-to-bottom, they will never be able to retain top talent and Latinos will never rise to leadership positions,” Mota said. “Our focus is on what companies can do now and the steps to get there.”

The Leadership Tour will begin at Motorola Solutions in Chicago on Tuesday, Jan. 30, with a panel featuring speakers from Barilla, Edelman, H&R Block and Motorola Solutions who will share keys to career progression and challenges Latino professionals face.

“We understand that diverse, dynamic teams are among the keys to a successful business,” said Matt Blakely, Director of Inclusion, Diversity and Culture at Motorola Solutions. “We’re thrilled to host HACE and be a part of this important discussion.”

The second stop on the tour will be hosted by the Major League Baseball corporate office in New York City on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Additional events will be held across the country in San Francisco, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Washington D.C. and McLean, Va. Each event will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. (local times) with time for networking among attendees and recruiters prior to panel sessions with executives from corporate sponsors that include ADP, NBA, NFL, Hyatt, Freddie Mac, Merck, AT&T, Oath, Marathon Oil, Capgemini and Northern Trust.

Meet Danielle Olson: A ‘Gique’ Advancing the Case for STEAM Education

What is a “Gique”? It’s a cross between “geek” and “chic,” a maker and creative problem-solver whose interdisciplinary interests turn STEM into STEAM. Meet Danielle Olson, researcher and PhD student at MIT and proud founder of Gique, a nonprofit that provides transformational, culturally situated STEAM learning for underserved youth.

Olson says being a Gique is about using your passion to embrace change and create your dream job. Olson offered STEMconnector her insights and experience as an engineer, a dancer, a dreamer, and pioneer in STEAM education, as well as research on how the arts are leveling the educational playing field in STEM.

STEMconnector: How does using the arts impact the STEM talent gap?

Danielle Olson: Fortunately, a new and exciting field of education is emerging where curricula are designed to expose youth to the applications of science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics (STEAM) in the real world. STEAM, rather than just STEM, education focuses on student cultivation of the critical, creative, and participatory dispositions key to empowered, authentic engagement in both science and art, along with preparing students to think of ways that they can contribute to society as individuals.

The arts have been treated as a “cherry on top” in recent years. But research demonstrates that an arts education offers critical development opportunities for children, which include cognitive and social growth, long-term memory improvement, stress reduction, and promotion of creativity. In fact, research findings show that if arts were included in science classes, STEM would be more appealing to students, and exposure to experts in these fields could affect career decisions. Gique believes that STEAM education affords students opportunities to envision themselves pursuing their “dream careers,” which they may invent for themselves.

There are three categories that aid in representing various perspectives of art integration: (1) learning “through” and “with” the arts, (2) making connections across knowledge domains, and (3) collaborative engagement across disciplines.

Gique piloted a 9-month-long, out-of-school STEAM Program with students at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, an inner-city in Boston, Massachusetts, in the areas of science, the arts, and entrepreneurship by putting the theoretical framework, which underpins the necessity for STEAM education, into action.

SC: What kinds of lessons do you offer students?

DO: Gique designs and provides free, hands-on educational programs and mentorship to talented youth from diverse circumstances in the Boston area and in California. We create a safe, positive learning community for our students and cultivate their curiosity and self-esteem through two arms of programming:

  • Gique’s Science Can DANCE! Community Programs—provides youth with a way to explore STEAM through creative movement and dance choreography. By taking an integrated approach to breaking down technical concepts, we provide a unique mentorship opportunity for students interested in both arts and science topics.
  • Gique’s Out-of-School Time (OST) STEAM Program—a 9-month-long, weekly after-school program for middle school students to explore their personal interests in STEAM. This program enables students to receive long-term mentorship from innovators from around the world and participate in hands-on workshops and field trips. By the end of the semester, students gain a better understanding of how they can take an idea from concept to reality through innovation with art + design, science, and technology.

In addition to these two programs, Gique has provided a wide variety of educational opportunities to people of all ages in the Boston area for the past four years. We have collaborated with numerous organizations to provide educational programming, including MIT Museum, Harvard Museum of Science & Culture, Artisan’s Asylum, and General Assembly Boston.

SC: How can corporations that support a vibrant STEM workforce get involved in advancing STEAM education?

DO: First, corporations should stand with teachers and parents to fight back against policies that discourage interdisciplinary education. This may include, but is not limited to, policies that result in art, drama, history, and science class time reduction and policies, which discourage teachers from being innovative due to too much focus on standardized testing.

Second, people in power must use their influence to help give underrepresented groups more access to resources that can level the playing field in education. I had access to programs like FIRST Robotics Competition and MIT’s Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science Program, which changed my life, thanks to the generosity of donors investing directly in people of color by sponsoring these programs. However, I wouldn’t have been able to participate in these programs if I had to pay for them. That’s why Gique leverages the support of its sponsors to deliver life-changing experiences to students that help them pursue career dreams that they may have deemed impossible.

SC: How is Gique measuring its impact?

DO: We have a structured process in place to design, administer, and analyze quantitative and qualitative measurements, including pre- and post- assessments, audio/video interviews, and external feedback (from program staff/volunteers and parents/guardians).

Specifically, for Gique’s OST STEAM Program, a schema was developed to identify, both broadly and specifically, what students learned and in what context it applies to their lives. Prior to each term, the program leadership developed several goals for student impact, with measurable indicators to assess each goal. Assessment questions were adapted from the Museum of Science Boston’s Engineering is Elementary program assessment model. At the end of the semester, students completed the same assessment for the program leadership to understand what deltas occurred and what the development areas were for program improvement.

While the quantitative data collected often helped to inform strategic decisions and content choices, the qualitative data showed how the program impacted students, parents, volunteers and teachers. Gique wholeheartedly believes that learning experiences should be fun, so asking these qualitative questions were critical to the development and success of the pilot OST STEAM program.

Gaining parent/guardian feedback served to be an excellent indicator of how excited students were about the program.

Gal Gadot Surprises College Student With First Wonder Woman Scholarship

Gal Gadot stepped out of her Wonder Woman costume on Wednesday to surprise a young woman with a truly wonderful award: a college scholarship.

The actress appeared at the Hollywood Reporter’s 2017 Women in Entertainment breakfast to present that lucky individual with a four-year, full-ride Wonder Woman Scholarship to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

The scholarship was donated by Warner Brothers, the company behind Gadot’s breakthrough film, “Wonder Woman.”

Gadot said she was proud to bestow the award.

“I’ve had the privilege of portraying a superhero onscreen, but the young women here today are the real superheroes,” Gadot said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “They’ve overcome so many challenges in their lives, and they’re driven to do more. They’re the true leaders of tomorrow.”

The woman who received the scholarship, whom the Hollywood Reporter identified only as Carla, started at the university a few weeks ago.

Actress Phylicia Rashad Will Be Face Of $25 Million Initiative To Diversify American History

You may know Phylicia Rashad from The Cosby Show and from her most recent role as Diana DuBois on the Fox hit show Empire, but the acclaimed actress has added a new title to her remarkable resume. 

Rashad is now the ambassador of the African-American Cultural Heritage Action Fund (AACHAF), a $25 million initiative aimed at preserving African American historical sites and teaching young black people about untold nuggets of black history.

The initiative is possible because of the work of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in partnership with the Ford Foundation, the JPB Foundation, and the Open Society Foundations. For 70 years, the National Trust has led the way in preserving historic sites – like the Shockoe Bottom in Richmond, Virginia, and the Fort Huachuca Black Officers’ Club in Arizona – that are important to black history and in just the past five years the organization has received $10 million to do its work.

“There is an opportunity and an obligation for us to step forward boldly and ensure the preservation of places which tell the often-overlooked stories of African Americans and their many contributions to our nation,” Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, said in a news release. “We believe that this fund will be transformative for our country, and we are committed to crafting a narrative that expands our view of history and, ultimately, begins to reconstruct our national identity, while inspiring a new generation of activists to advocate for our diverse historic places.”

In addition to preservation, there will be The National Trust’s Hands-On Preservation Experience that teaches youth about black history, and there will be a research aspect to the initiative that will find links to preserving historic sites and the resolution of urban problems. Academic, arts, government and business leaders will also play a role in the fund by serving on its advisory council.

‘SERVED LIKE A GIRL’ Redefines the Meaning of Patriotism

To be patriotic means to express devotion to and show vigorous support for one’s country. Which is exactly what is expected of anyone choosing to be apart of U.S. defense: patriotic.

But what about a country showing rigorous support for and devotion to its defenders? Its protectors? What about when our vets come back home?

That is the question that Lysa Heslov’s heart-wrenching documentary “Served Like a Girl” poses. It gives a harsh look at the realities of being deployed, surviving trauma and living through the inequalities of serving as a woman. And then it gently leads you to asking why women veterans are not getting the support they need when they need it the most.

With its blend of tactical editing, exceptional scoring and focused cinematography it tells these women’s remarkable stories and leads us to defining the true meaning of patriotism and the power of resilience.

And breathtakingly resilient is exactly what these women are. The film, although not the most beautifully shot, follows them closely and focuses on the challenges they have faced since returning home from deployment, respectfully. Heslov gets the women to dig deep, all the while keeping it lighthearted by choosing following them as they prepare for the Ms. Veteran American competition.

Everything from health issues, to PTSD, sexual trauma, depression, anxiety and homelessness are discussed and Heslov positions herself carefully so as to catch those moments where they may falter, shed a tear or take a moment to break down, but to also capture the moments where they build themselves back up, crack a smile or tell a joke. It is magnificently empowering to watch these women go from one moment to the other.

And although the film advertised itself as focusing mainly on homelessness and the pageant, we forgive the false advertisement, because Heslov and her team paint a wide stroke to show us just how large and expansive the issue of mistreatment and lack of support really is.

The broadness of the film’s focus shows a clear indication of Heslov’s complete lack of ego and willingness be open to whatever story this documentary may end up telling. With a clear focus on personal stories, well-timed comic relief moments and a meticulous score that accompanies each emotional moment, we allow it. We become invested in these women and let the team take us to wherever as we revel in these women’s stories and root for them ’til the end.

Georgia Tech Received CMD-IT University Award for Retention of Minorities and Students with Disabilities in Computer Science

The Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in IT (CMD-IT) presented Georgia Tech with the first annual CMD-IT University Award for Retention of Minorities and Students with Disabilities in Computer Science.  The University Award recognizes US institutions that have demonstrated a commitment and shown results for the retention of students from underrepresented groups in undergraduate Computer Science programs over the last five years. The award, sponsored by Microsoft, is focused on the underrepresented groups African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, and People with Disabilities. Georgia Tech received the award September 21st at the 2017 ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing in Atlanta, Georgia.  The award included a $15,000 cash award.

The CMD-IT University Award decision was based on both Georgia Tech’s impressive quantitative reported results, which reflected high retention and graduation rates and qualitative reporting on their various retention programs  In particular, Georgia Tech highlighted the following four programs as directly impacting retention and graduation:

  • Threads Undergraduate Curriculum: Students are given the opportunity to take control over their curriculum by choosing two of eight Threads to create their degree plan which gives them more than 28 different degree plans to follow. This resulted in students feeling they have more control and a better understanding of their degree plan.
  • Georgia Computes and Project Rise Up: The two programs are spearheaded by Georgia Tech to help increase engagement in computing  by broadening participation in computer science at all educational levels by underrepresented groups.  These programs increase interest in Computer Science.
  • Mandatory Introductions to Computer Science classes: All students enrolled in Bachelor’s degree programs at Georgia Tech must take one of three computer science classes. The three programs enable students to take courses that fit their level of experience in Computer Science.
  • Travel Scholarships to Conference: Georgia Tech provides between 40 and 120 travel scholarships to leading tech conferences with a diversity focus. Students build networks of support and return with a feeling of renewed commitment to their degree program.

As the nation’s most trusted annual benchmarking tool, the DEI offers unique insight into the progress companies are making towards disability inclusion. Each year, more and more companies participate. In 2017, 21 industry sectors were represented, and 69 companies were Fortune 500 companies.

There are other disability inclusion measurement tools, but none are as comprehensive as the DEI. This in-depth analysis and insight brings a level of quality, trust and accuracy that Fortune 500 companies value.

Regardless of score, each participating company is:

  • Given a complimentary copy of the 2018 DEI Report, which consists of detailed aggregate results and benchmarking information.
  • Presented a scorecard outlining areas in which they excel, as well as those in need of improvement.
  • Invited to exclusive networking opportunities with other participating DEI companies at the USBLN Annual Conference.
  • Offered customized DEI consulting services specifically geared towards increasing their DEI score.

All registered companies will receive access to the 2018 DEI the week of January 22, 2018 to begin submission of responses. Final company DEI responses are due back on April 13, 2018. DEI scores will be finalized by late June 2018.
